You may think that using a long reach hedge cutter would be more difficult to operate due to the length, most being around 2.2 to 2.4 metres overall, in reality this is not the case in most applications. With large hedge rows, for example a leylandii surrounding your garden or path is cut much easier, more efficiently using a pole hedgetrimmer, today's models have articulating clipper blades making it easy to angle the blade at around 30° from the shaft, this allows you to stand back from the work area and effectively sweep the blades up and down the face of the hedge providing you with a clear sight line ensuring your hedge is cut evenly, this can be more difficult with standard hand held hedgetrimmers as you are forced to stand very close to your workpiece.

Another clear advantage of the pole or long reach hedge trimmer is when topping a hedge, in most cases, a domestic hedge is kept between 6 and 8 feet tall, with a handheld hedge cutter you would be forced into using steps or work platforms to provide you with the height required to reach and trim the tops of your hedges, with a pole hedge trimmer, the need for steps is virtually eliminated, you simply angle the blade set as required, and standing again, away from the hedge you can walk with your feet firmly on the ground and trim the top section, again with a good sight view allowing easier and more accurate trimming.
