10 Rules for Optimal Composting

• A wind proof, semi shaded area, near the house is ideal.

• You'll need a container for collecting composting and storing the waste material.

• Shred the plant trimmings using a shredder.

• The better the balance between green nitrogenous material and brown carbon containing substances the better the result.

• Do not pile up large quantities of the same material in one area, always mix the materials.

• Ensure that the climate conditions are correct, not too damp, and not too dry.

• Always cover the compost to protect against the rain, sun and weeds.

• Compost material must make contact with the soil to provide access for worms and insects.

• Mix freshly deposited compost with mature compost.

• Always have a pitchfork at hand so that newly deposited material, such as kitchen waste, can be continually mixed with the old material underneath.
